They were a puppet society; they influenced social change among the 'black' population which lead to more natives becoming educated, first via Christian education, then by having new established local institutes of western thought. The black puppet society also help open up commercial trade between the native people and Europeans, of which Europeans had a hard time establishing before due to trust.
